When Your Book Is Full and Your Tank Is Empty
It’s the end of the year, a time when your calendar is slammed, the energy is high, and somehow, your feet still hurt from last Tuesday.
This season is historically the busiest for stylists, but with the emotional rollercoaster of the year (hi, inflation, cancellations, and lightning fast hair trends), it’s been feeling like a tale of two salons: the haves and the have-nots. Your books are either stacked or looking more unpredictable than ever. Regardless, the emotional energy it takes to show up and to listen, perform, create, and comfort each client is enough to burn anyone out.
Let’s talk about what you can do to show up for yourself before you hit empty.
The Obvious (But Annoyingly True) Things
You might not want to hear it, but…
-
Move your body: Just move. Even 10 minutes of walking can shift your nervous system.
-
Eat something green: Or at least not beige. And if you can’t? A supplement counts.
-
Sleep: Not scrolling in bed. Actual, blackout, mouth-open sleep.
Micro Escapes That Actually Work
When you can’t book a vacation, try these five-minute resets:
-
Drive a different way home. Literally go the long way. Don't stop, just drive safely.
-
Play music that’s not salon related. Something without a beat that reminds you who you were before 47 holiday blowouts.
-
Put in headphones and walk a quiet aisle at the store. Yes, even Target works.
-
Find a new podcast, one that has nothing to do with business.
-
Turn the chair off for a moment: metaphorically and physically.
The Slightly Controversial Wellness Stuff (But Always Do You)
I'm going to tread lightly here. But if you’ve already tried it all…
-
Red light therapy: Throw it next to your bed. 10 mins while replying to DMs = done. Amazon has some great options.
-
Semax, copper peptides, B12 patches: Not for everyone, but might be something to look into.
-
Nicotine patch (no, seriously): Microdoses are being studied for neuroregulation. Talk to your doctor before you DM us about this one. Read More
When You’re Out of Ideas
-
Date night: Not just romantic. A date with yourself, a book, or your best friend at the quietest corner of a coffee shop.
-
Buy a new pen: (This is actually my favorite thing to purchase.) Then write something with it. A goal. A feeling.
-
Go to the bookstore and sit. No purchase required.
Avoiding Overstimulation When You’re Already Maxed Out
-
Skip the group chat.
-
Don’t bring your phone to the bathroom (you know who you are).
-
Mute the notifications, start for 2 hours.
-
Light one candle. Not three.
-
Say no to one thing this week. Just one. We’re not trying to be radicals here.
Final Thought
You are allowed to be tired and still be passionate.
You are allowed to set boundaries and still be booked.
And you are absolutely allowed to romanticize your life without burning out trying to do it all.
Let this be your gentle reminder that your energy is your most expensive tool. Sharpen it. Protect it. And don’t let burnout become your business model.
