The Do's and Don'ts of Clarifying Shampoo

All shampoos are created to do one thing, clean the excess oil and wax like sebum that builds up on the hair and scalp. However, how these shampoo’s cleanse are very different. From the micro awareness of how the micelle’s take shape (circular, worm or rod-like) and how concentrated they are in each formulation are two of the many nuance differences you will notice only through your end results.

When to reach for your Clarifying Shampoo and who should use one:

  • Everyone can benefit from a clarifying shampoo every once in a while merely based on environmental buildup to the type of water you are exposed to. Resetting scalp and hair strands to rid itself of the excess build up is important to maintain a healthy scalp.
  • If damage is present along the hair strand from heat or chemical exposure you will need to clarify more frequently than you may have thought. Sebum and certain types of proteins are what we call “sticky” and these elements like to stick to cracks of damaged cuticles. Once they stick to damage it attracts more dirt and buildup that can become difficult to remove from the hair fiber. Having a clarifying shampoo helps to lift away the dirt and debris from the hair strand as well as resetting your scalp.
  • If you do not clarify this excess weight along the hair strand may be linked to hair behaving lifeless and appearing lackluster.

While we do not recommend that a clarifying shampoo takes the place of a hydrating ‘daily’ shampoo like Signature Shampoo, clarifying will be an important step in ensuring your clients hair and scalp is kept balanced.
